Soloist

Tom has played many concertos and recitals in concert halls across the UK and internationally, and continues to do so. These have included performances with the BBC Proms, The Hallé conducted by Mark Elder, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Ulster Orchestra, Malmö Opera Orchestra, and USA tours with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra.

His recording of the Walton and Barber concertos with his friend Joseph Swensen continues to draw admiration and much affection, with the Walton being considered by many to be as fine a version as exists.

February 2022 saw the launch of another collaboration between these two friends - a recording of the two violin concertos of Eleanor Alberga.

This album also includes Alberga’s song cycle The Soul’s Expression and features the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and baritone Morgan Pearse.

Recorded in February 2o21 under strict Covid protocols, this recording is a reflection of relationships going back many years. Bowes’s playing is beloved by both Alberga and Swensen, and it was Swensen who helped to get the first concerto commissioned - and who conducted the world premiere of both works.

Both concertos are yet to be enjoyed by a wider audience in the concert hall. None of the pieces on this disc have yet been heard beyond premiere performances; all await North American premieres and performances beyond the UK.

“Thomas Bowes: sensitive, refined, thoughtful, elegant, as well as brilliant, even flamboyant… captures every aspect of this concerto almost to perfection... He yields to no-one in terms of sensitivity and technical mastery.”

Piers Burton-Page - Walton Concerto CD review, BBC Radio 3

“Bowes yields to none of the Walton’s great interpreters - Heifetz (the dedicatee), Menuhin, Francescatti, Chung, Kennedy - in his dazzling passage work and he brings a deliciously laid-back italianita… with his gorgeous portamento and rubato.”

Hugh Canning - Walton Concerto CD review, Sunday Times
