Elgar’s Sospiri, Op. 70 in a breathtaking new arrangement by Eleanor Alberga is out now from Thomas Bowes with Sinfonia Arcadiana and Nic Fallowfield.
Meaning “sighs” in Italian, this short work is often described as one of Elgar’s most private, sorrowful utterances and was premiered in August 1914 just as the First World War broke out.
